There are a number of reasons why you could have your driver’s license suspended. Sometimes, it happens without being pulled over for another driving offense. Below are a few main reasons for a suspension.

    • Driving Without Insurance – If you fail to fill out a renewal form with car insurance information and/or to obtain car insurance with the legally required minimum coverage amount, you could have your license suspended for 60-90 days. The amount of time depends on the state.
    • Disregarding Court Orders – If you fail to attend court-ordered driver’s ed classes, appear in court, and/or pay traffic fines, then you could have your driver’s license suspended for an indefinite period of time. It will remain suspended until these obligations are met.
    • Criminal Convictions – If you are convicted of drug possession, DUI, vehicular homicide, or vandalism, you could you’re your license suspended. In addition, you could also have your license suspended if you fail to pay child support or report an accident. Again, suspension length varies by state.
    • Medical Conditions – If you are diagnosed with a medical condition that makes you an unsafe driver (such as narcolepsy, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, or legal blindness), your license could be suspended indefinitely or even permanently.

You will need a defense attorney if you are caught driving with a suspended license. You can also apply for a restricted license, for which you are eligible if you were convicted of a DUI and completed a drug and alcohol program.
